Laura J. Hickerson is a Denver artist whose work has long revolved around the depiction of dreams. During her studies at the Metropolitan State University of Denver, Hickerson has captured the essence of dreams in her paintings, first by recreating the forms of monsters from her nightmares, then later by mapping out the expansive worlds she traveled through in her dreams.
However, during the years of research on dreams and efforts to recreate them, she found that creating accurate art of transient dreams was ultimately impossible. In Other Side of Dreaming, the artist has taken many of her past dream paintings and warped them, tearing them apart and reworking them into new forms, similar to how dreams themselves warp and recombine each night. As always, she seeks to create a window into the dream world for viewers to look through, but in Other Side she creates a physical doorway, in which viewers can insert themselves and come closer to their own dreams.
